N1 Canonbury – Then and Now
With reference to Wikipedia, Canonbury N1 is in the heart of the London Borough of Islington and is just North of the City of London. The name Canonbury derived back in 1253 according to this source because the land at that time was given to the manor of the Canons of St Bartholomew's Priory located in Smithfield, or better known as, `The Great St Bart’s`. More subsequently In the Mid-Nineteenth-Century, the land of Canonbury developed into an inner-city London area. Notable figures of Canonbury included: Thomas Cromwell the 1st Earl of Essex, the great historical philosopher Sir Francis Bacon, and the Famous Novelist George Orwell who lived at 27 Canonbury Square until the Bombings of WW2 struck London and forced him out of his abode. Today, Canonbury N1 is legendary for its beautiful architecture which is surrounded by many bars and restaurants which adds further flair to its already charming character.
